Hydrogen is both clean and infinitely available, making it a prime candidate for tomorrow’s energy solutions across a broad range of industries. Currently, however, hydrogen is mainly produced using fossil fuels. CEA Tech institute Liten is working to overcome this hurdle, and has developed a hydrogen production system using the high-temperature electrolysis of water vapor. The system’s exceptional yields—greater than 90 %—place it at the global state of the art and open the door to a range of new possibilities for the technology as a potential solution to smoothing out intermittent renewable energy production. The system can also operate in reversible mode, making it an “energy hub” that can deliver either hydrogen or electricity and heat.
Liten has also developed a low-pressure solid-hydride (more stable than pressurized gas) hydrogen storage technology, and Liten researchers are currently working on a tank that would enable “on demand” hydrogen adsorption/desorption and investigating ways to pair the tank with a fuel cell.
ALL TECHNOLOGY PLATFORMS
A 50 kW SOFC-type fuel cell will be installed on board the MSC Europa cruise ship (built by the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard) in 2022. The project* is financed by French energy agency ADEME and marks a major step toward making cruise ships more environmentally friendly.
Researchers investigated whether or not additive manufacturing affects a material’s hydrogen resistance. They designed an experiment to test the theory on parts made from Inconel, a material used for certain parts in the Ariane 6 launcher’s engines.
The French government recently announced its strategy to develop hydrogen to drive the energy transition. Liten, a CEA Tech institute, plans to leverage its know-how in hydrogen technology and software to support this strategy.
Pressure can enhance the performance of co-electrolysis without negatively affecting equipment lifespans. Researchers recently demonstrated the principle for the first time ever in a long-duration test.
Construction on the Jupiter 1000 power-to-gas demonstrator plant began on December 19, 2017 in Fos-sur-Mer in the South of France. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by a number of elected officials. Research scientist Laurent Bedel of Liten, a CEA Tech institute, spoke to us about the project.
