Reinventing the care pathway
Toward more accessible and efficient X-ray imaging exams
Portable imaging and precision imaging
Many healthcare systems face two major challenges that may seem contradictory. On one hand, there is the issue of access to care in medical deserts, which requires the development of mobile and agile diagnostic solutions. On the other hand, there is the growing demand for precision medicine, which calls for cutting-edge, personalized diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for each patient. Medical imaging, a source of major innovations, holds remarkable potential to address these challenges—both by advancing portable imaging and by developing precision imaging based on advanced technologies and theranostics.
CEA-Leti at the forefront of breakthrough technologies
The era when imaging exams could only be performed in hospitals or specialized centers will soon be over: X-ray sources are being miniaturized, and imaging systems are becoming lighter and more compact for mobility. They aim to reach health centers, medical deserts, and nursing homes to enable earlier diagnoses, provide faster patient care, strengthen preventive measures, and reduce the strain on radiology services. These portable imaging devices seek to transform care pathways, offering high-quality, in-depth imaging through reconstruction without the need to transport fragile patients to a scanner. CEA-Leti plays a key role in deploying these disruptive technologies: it develops silicon technology to miniaturize X-ray sources, reinvents interventional radiology with new spectral detectors to improve diagnostic precision while reducing patient radiation dose, and prepares the next generation of photon-counting scanners. At the same time, it enhances the sensitivity performance of positron gamma imaging for greater patient comfort, opening up prospects for simultaneous multi-isotope imaging (diagnostic and theranostic).
