REMEDEE LABS - Electronic endorphin stimulation for pain relief

Published on 28 April 2020

Endorphins are the body's natural pain killers. And they can be stimulated by applying millimeter waves to the skin. The concept dates back to the 70s. Today Remedee Labs is bringing it into the 21st century with a device small enough to be integrated into a wristband.

Before they were replaced by analgesics, millimeter waves had been used successfully to treat pain in millions of patients. Remedee Labs' two-square-centimeter device will replace hospital equipment that took up several cubic meters. A silicon chip emits a 60 GHz signal to stimulate the production of endorphins with no side effects or habituation. It has the potential to reduce and, potentially, completely eliminate the use of analgesics to treat low to moderate chronic pain.

The company, spun off from Leti in 2016, continues to collaborate with the institute through R&D contracts and has filed several patents to protect the technology. A clinical trial has been completed and the technology has been proven safe. New trials are underway to evaluate the device's efficacy on surgical pain, arthritis, and migraines. It is not expected to reach the market until at least 2022.
